tuesday, back in vijayawada
below are some pictures from our walk up the tirumala hills. it was about 11km (5k = 3.1 miles), and we ended up doing it barefoot. we got to the top in the evening, had dinner, went to bed around 10 and woke up at 2 to receive darshan at 4 am. receiving darshan basically means receiving blessings, and the temple gives out laddus (sweets) after, which have been blessed. maybe kinda like communion,...
blazin out yo la tengo, ey ey.
i’m in hyderabad, one of the giant tech centric cities in india. yesterday we went to a shopping center, and in the food court the ice cream shop had the two best flavors: “lewinsky” and “awful awful.” the weather here is mild. we are staying in my aunt’s luxury apartment, and the back half of the city looms up out of the balcony at night. like i said before,...
day 5
i’m at my grandma’s house and she just tied this holy thread she got on my wrist from when she went to varanasi, one of the holiest places in india. it’s in uttar pradesh (north india), on the banks of the ganga river. she also gave me some water from the river to drink, which i did very carefully. it was funny to stand there in her living room, with the ganges flowing down my...
bush in rwanda, confronting two genocides →
but no regrets! what a cowboy he is. » i just finished ‘what is the what’ and something valentino achak deng says really rings true, international communities pay much more attention to conflicts in which there are clear villains and victims. we are such simpletons. » “rwanda’s shadow, from darfur to congo” - article from 2006 about the conflict in congo (very...
i got the beats to make you bang bang bang
feb 19, 7:35 am: i’m in vijayawada. i broke my SLR camera as soon as i stepped foot in my grandparents’ courtyard. only 3 mosquito bites to report. it’s winter here, so the weather is amazing. everything has changed in the last five years. development is definitely overtaking the country, along with technology. high-rises are springing up where ancestral homes once were. my diet...
hands up, guns out
hi, i’m going to india today for a couple weeks for my cousin’s wedding. i’ll be back march 4th. i’ll try and update periodically. if you’d like a postcard, or just want to say hi, email me. i’d love to hear from you. until then, ciao!
black leaders lean towards obama →
most misused word in political journalism lately — i nominate “momentum.” i wonder how the superdelegate thing will shape up. i wonder what’ll happen in michigan… we’ve been stripped of our delegates bc our party leaders are dense. what about the supers? i wonder who they’ll go for. i mean would they really go for hillary? her name was the only one on the...

“Last night, America elected its first co-presidents of Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia: a charismatic young senator, and some sort of midget goblin.” this picture + caption literally had me rolling on the floor. i love wonkette
oh my gawd, is that a black card?
seriously, i’ve gotten 3 “your name here” credit cards from am ex in the last week. back off creeps.

flip it and reverse it
actually, pimped out is wrong. chelsea is more like a video hofessional, especially in front of the media. she just kinda stands there and won’t talk (no word on if she can dance).
it's time for the press to scrutinize chelsea. →
one, chelsea clinton is 28?! wasn’t she like 13 maybe 5 years ago? two, if chelsea is publicly campaigning and calling superdelegates, let er have it. three, who doesn’t think chelsea’s being (willingly) pimped out? four, as cenk uygur pointed out, the role david shuster was playing was complicated. was he acting as a newscaster, or as a talking head? the heads have said much...
just deaf and dumb, now.
i just got new glasses. i can’t tell if they forgot to skinnify my lenses, or if i really am this blind. i suspect i really may be this blind. this has to be a joke. the lenses are unbelievably thick. i look like milhouse for real.
don’t get caught in the weeds. be visceral. use your heart — and...
– michelle obama to barack, wsj
why obama spanks?
“Mr. Obama has won almost all caucuses, which depend on deep organization and a passionate following.” — katharine seelye nyt 021108. so is that it, then?
what i did for love
Nikki: I am trying to think of what to do for valentine's day
me: why don tyou dress up as george michael
Nikki: i really dont see how that suggestion fits the question
me: george michael bluth!
Nikki: yeah i got it
me: does that make it more relevant?
Nikki: no
oh, that's my cue.
new york guy: so where do you live?
mallory: williamsburg.
new york guy: oh... so are you visiting for the weekend?
mallory: uh... i have to go.
i'm always late.
somebody from the obama campaign called me tonight to say thanks! for volunteering. he told me interesting things that he probably read off of a sheet. for example, obama and hill split delegates evenly in our district. also, every 500 people we convince to vote for obama means one new york delegate. i think i convinced one girl to vote obama solely on his immigration policies (and also maybe a...

why do i always overeat when free food is involved?
this will all blow over in time
1:56 am: weird, i’m watching music videos on tv and the lead singer of the cold war kids (nathan willett) has this dirty/attractive woody harrelson thing going on. which makes his high, whiny voice really weird coming out of that face.
mitt romney is new coke
– jon stewart
willard mitt romney has been smited.
mitt romney totally dropped out. i’m not surprised, though. mitt is a businessman, not a hopemonger. dude knows when to jump ship. that said, i will miss him and his healthy good looks.
it's pretty easy being green
so lately i’ve been thinking… john edwards and clinton went carbon neutral for their campaigns. why can’t barack? he certainly has the money. i wish he would put it where his mouth is. especially with candidates like him criss-crossing the country daily in chartered planes and buses. imagine. i know that buying carbon offsets isn’t the perfect solution, or a long-term one,...
maybe i'm crazy?
it is 3:28 on a thursday. rain is falling directly onto my skull. in other news, if you are a dj and a girl requests mia or kid sister and instead you put on “crazy” by gnarls barkley and the dance floor embarrassingly empties, you should be shot. the end.
is it wrong to wish on space hardware?
the only thing i’ve realized in the last couple of days are: 1. polls are useless 2. spin is everything
ilf, in general
me: trudie mccain's face is pulled so tight
yick
Octave: haha and the hair too
me: ugh
she's kind of a gilf though
Octave: haha

me: probs

Octave: roberta might be a gggilf

Octave: haha

or a cohilf
(crazy old hag)
or is it just his name.
damn, tim russert looks like a sack of idaho potatoes that’ve been left under the sink too long. so endearing though.

ew huckabee is wearing his shiny white eyeshadow again. dude needs a makeover asap.
explain
one thing i don’t understand: how come obama is doing so much better in states that caucus? is it the way caucuses (cauci?) are fundamentally organized? somebody tell me. email me. thanks.
banana.republic
oooh, i’m really liking hillary’s outfit right now. banana yellow is weirdly a good color for her. chelsea’s outfit, however, looks like something i bought at old navy in the 9th grade.
